Blue Room’s Coastal Travel Guide: From Mombasa to Diani. Your Route, Your Haven, Your Coast.

How to Get to Blue Room (and Mombasa) — By SGR, Road ✈️or By Air

✈️ By Air
Flights between Nairobi and Mombasa run several times a day, take just about one hour, and are quite affordable — around ksh 10,000 one way.

If you’re heading directly to the South Coast, you can also fly from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Ukunda Airport, which is just 10 minutes from Diani Beach. These flights are also about an hour long and similarly priced.

Even if you’re flying straight to Ukunda, it’s worth carving out a few hours to explore Mombasa Town— Blue Room makes a perfect reason to stop. Grab a milkshake, some coastal biryani, or just soak up that city energy before heading across the ferry or via Dongo Kundu to the South Coast.

🚆 By SGR Train
The SGR Madaraka Express runs twice daily between Nairobi and Mombasa. It’s clean, safe, and very budget friendly — though the ride takes around 6 hours. From Miritini Station, you can easily connect to the city, stop at Blue Room for a meal or cool drink, then continue on to your hotel or onward to the South Coast.

  • 🚗 By Road
Driving from Nairobi to Mombasa takes between 8-10 hours on the paved but busy Mombasa Highway. It’s a long trip, but it comes with plenty of reward: you can stop at Tsavo National Park for a quick safari or detour through Shimba Hills National Reserve on your way to the coast.

South Coast or North Coast — and Where Does Mombasa CBD Fall?

Imagine Mombasa Island as a whale floating between sea and shore. Its head facing toward the mainland, where roads and the SGR arrive from Nairobi, while its tail dips toward the ferry and the open waters leading to Diani. The North coast stretches along its back, from Nyali to Malindi, full of beaches, nightlife, and ocean breeze. The South coast flows towards its belly, calm and wide, where Tiwi and Diani invite rest and slow living. The North Coast hums with cosmopolitan rhythm — Nyali, Bamburi , Shanzu, then further up, Kilifi, Watamu and Malindi, where palms sway like they know something you don’t. It’s energy, nightlife, and ocean perfume wrapped into one endless holiday.

The South Coast, reached by ferry then a road trip or the scenic Dongo Kundu Road, moves differently. Time loosens its tie here. Tiwi, Watamu and Diani stretch out in languid perfection…miles of blinding white sand, emerald shallows, and a hush that feels like prayer.

Finding Your Bearings

Blue Room is such a perfect starting point. It’s the city’s unofficial ground zero. Here, travelers fuel up before their coastal adventures, cone of ice cream in hand and a plan forming somewhere between the first bite and the sea breeze.

Three Blue Rooms, Three Doorways to the Coast

1. Blue Room – Haile Selassie (CBD)
In the pulsing heart of Mombasa Island, this is the legendary original. Stop by after a Fort Jesus tour or an Old Town walk — where coral-stone walls whisper of Portuguese sailors and Omani traders. A quick lunch here, and you’re tasting history with every forkful of biryani.

2. Blue Room – Nkurumah
Perfect for those fresh from a Mapembeni photo shoot. The Nkurumah Branch catches the city’s hum just right — half heritage, half hustle — ideal for breakfast before a day of leisurely thobe and abaya shopping or scent hunting at Makadara.

3. Blue Room – Likoni Mall
Heading to Diani? This is your last checkpoint before paradise. Whether you’re crossing via Likoni Ferry or taking the Dongo Kundu Drive, stop here first. Order a hearty breakfast, stock up on snacks, and let the scent of coastal curry accompany you on your journey south.
